Is Your Home Properly Covered for 2012?

The beginning of the year is a good time to review your insurance policies to make sure you have adequate limits and coverage.

Insurance companies use a cost per square foot to determine what they would need to pay out to replace your home. If you have a standard 2,500-square-foot home and the insurance company is paying $175 a square foot, your limit would be $437,500.

If the insurance company changed it to $150 a square foot, your limit would be $375,000. You would see a savings in premium based on the lower limit of coverage.

If you don’t agree with the limit of coverage on your home, another option is to get an independent appraisal of your replacement cost. Insurance carriers generally honor these reports and will charge you based on the limit that you request.

Another area to review is contents coverage. Have you bought or sold any big-ticket items throughout the year? If you purchased electronics for your new home theater or specialized equipment for a hobby, you may want to adjust your limit of contents coverage to make sure it is adequate.

This is where your insurance agent can shine and help you determine the best choice in coverage for your needs. Your agent can tailor your coverage to your needs.

After weeks of parties, baking, extravagant dinners and holiday-themed cocktails, many people wake up in January to find they’ve added a few extra pounds.

According to several studies from the last 10 years, the average adult gains at least one pound during the holiday season. A study by The New England Journal of Medicine indicates most people don’t ever shed that weight.

Following are some tips and tricks to help you sensibly shed the holiday weight:

Trade Sugary Juice and Soda for Water: Drinking water will help your body flush out toxins and can stop you from overeating. If you overindulged in seasonal cocktails, try eliminating all alcoholic beverages in January.

Eliminate Starch and Sugar From Your Diet: This can help kickstart your weight loss. Refined sugars and starches – like those found in candy and white bread – can add to waistline bulge.

Eat Small Meals: Christmas meals usually involve long, sit-down meals with several courses. Try eating five small meals instead of three large ones, with no snacking in between. Aim to include protein, whole grains, and fruits or vegetables in each meal.

Snack Responsibly: Have a container of washed and cut vegetables and fruit in the fridge so that an easy and healthy snack is always available.

Eliminate Processed Foods: Highly processed items such as potato chips, some granola bars and frozen meals are often high in sugar and sodium.

General Liability: Are You Properly Covered?

General liability is an essential type of coverage for a business owner.

If you run a bakery, manufacture a product or have clients come to your office, there is a liability exposure.

Commercial general liability insurance comes with six different components of coverage.

Following is a sample of how most liability declarations pages would read for someone with a $1 million limit:

General Aggregate – $2,000,000

Products-Completed Operations Aggregate – $2,000,000

Each Occurrence – $1,000,000

Personal and Advertising Injury – $1,000,000

Damage to Premises Rented to You – $500,000

Medical Expenses – $10,000

The General Aggregate and Each Occurrence categories correspond with each other. If there is a general liability claim (Each Occurrence) such as a slip and fall at the grocery store, it would contribute to the General Aggregate. There can be two claims of this type, up to $1 million each, before the limit of insurance is exhausted.

The Each Occurrence limit corresponds with the Products-Completed Operations Aggregate limit. If a customer swallowed on a piece of one of your products, like food or small plastic pieces, and got sick because of it, this claim would fall under the Products-Completed Operations Aggregate limit of insurance. As with the General Aggregate limit, there can be two claims of this type, up to $1 million each, before the limit of insurance is exhausted.

Personal and Advertising Injury provides coverage for oral or written material that may be libelous or slanderous or that copies another’s advertisement, logo, slogan or other artistic work so closely that it can be confused with the original, as well as discrimination or humiliation that ruins someone’s reputation. The limit of coverage on claims of this type is $1 million. There is no General Aggregate limit provided.

If you are renting the space for your business and you accidentally cause a fire that destroys part or all of the building, the limit of Damage to Premises Rented to You will cover this cost. This coverage is sometimes called Fire Legal Liability. There is no aggregate on this limit either. Insurance carriers offer various limits on this one. Some may offer half of the Each Occurrence limit, while others may offer up to the same limit.

If there is a minor accident that results in some small injury or damage, Medical Expenses will pay the claim up to the limit of insurance. For claims in excess it would require the claimant to prove you were responsible. If you are responsible, your liability occurance would apply.

Higher limits are also available. Many companies offer $2 million to $4 million limits, and some are even beginning to offer $3 million to $6 million limits as well.

Also, deductibles generally do not apply with liability insurance as they do in property insurance.

Replacing our homes after a loss is very important but replacing our contents is one the most important aspects of picking up the pieces and putting our lives back together. Be prepared. We suggest using an online website such as www.knowyourstuff.org to inventory all of your possessions. We also recommend you take digital photos and/or videos and upload them to a secure website such as www.box.net.

And we will be there when you need us. The process of building trust and peace of mind begins the first time you sit down with one of our agents. It’s not about selling you a policy it’s about you knowing what to do and who to turn to for advice and assistance in the event the unthinkable happens.

By Leslie Fieger, ZeroMillion.com

Fieger maintains that she can predict with 95% accuracy the likelihood that a person will be successful, using 10 critical clues. For example, a winner’s attitude, she says, is characterized by high self-esteem, a positive outlook on life, a feeling of gratitude, a sense of great personal destiny, a willingness to learn and the will to do what is necessary. Anyone can discover this through self-analysis and shape their destiny by design, according to Fieger.

Gen Z is about to enter the workforce, and this new breed of workers calls for new recruiting tactics. For starters, forget email and plan your hiring strategy around smartphone apps and social networking tools. Ditch outdated views about college degrees, as Gen Zers have embraced do-it-yourself and alternative types of education on a large scale. Recognize that Gen Zers are independent thinkers, so pitch them projects rather than titles.

The Recession-Proof Business, by Victor Cheng

There are two ways a business can behave in a bad economy: the first way is to withdraw and hope to sit it out; the second is to step on the gas.

It’s probably true to say that in most cases, option two is your best bet. After all, a recession can actually be the best time to win market share. While all your competitors are cutting back, you can grow.

Cheng’s book will help you do just that. The book is a blend of good business practice (important at any time for winning companies; vital during a recession) and advice about re-inventing your business to make it meet customer needs during these times and therefore prosper.

A large chunk of the book focuses, quite rightly, on marketing as the key to growth and, unfortunately, the area where many businesses cut back during tough times.

This book is worth reading, whether you are booming or struggling right now.

What You Need to Know About Workers’ Comp

Before the federal government stepped in during the early 1900s, the only recourse an injured employee or their family had was to launch a lawsuit against an employer.

At that time, employers felt they did not have an obligation to continue to pay employees who’d been injured on the job.

Pittsburgh Survey

The Pittsburgh Survey, a detailed study done in 1907-08 of living and working conditions in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, had a special impact on job safety and health.

A major topic of the study was industrial accidents.

The study found that injured workers and survivors of those killed on the job bore the economic brunt of accidents, even though most were the fault of employers.

Authors of the study agreed that, for reasons of social equity, employers should bear a substantial share of the economic burden.
The theory behind this strategy was that it would give the employers more incentive to eliminate the causes of accidents.

Legislation

In the early 1930s, labor standards started taking shape.
The government quickly enacted legislation that created a minimum wage.

Health and Safety

By 1970, health and safety in the workplace came to prominence.
So did fair labor standards.

Workers’ compensation policies were eventually created to give both employers and employees protection and satisfaction.

How It Works

For a work-related injury, an employee may sue the employer or collect medical payments.

The employee does not get both options.

To reflect this, workers’ compensation policies limit the liability available to an employer if an employee sues.

The policies also classify all employees based on their job descriptions.

Employees Rated

Each employee is rated based on the degree of risk of injury and the amount of payroll the employer pays that group of people.

For example, a roofing company will have roofers on the road all day for various jobs, as well as clerical people in the office. Roofers are rated more highly because their job poses more of a danger.

There is a greater likelihood that a roofer in the field would incur a severe injury than a worker in the office, who is in a relatively safer environment all day.

Requirements

Workers’ compensation coverage is a requirement in every state whether an employer has one worker or hundreds.

No matter what kind of business you have, let your insurance agent help you find the best policy to meet your needs.

5 Ways to Make Good Use of the Holiday Lull

If you’re not working in a retail environment, chances are the holiday season is a slack time for you.

This annual slowdown can be a good opportunity for you to catch up, evaluate the past year and prepare for the one ahead.

Following are five ways you can make the holiday slowdown work for you and your business:

Update Processes and Install New Software: This is a great time to identify new processes and programs that can help you work better, faster and more efficiently. Take advantage of the December lull to research what’s new and to train yourself and your staff on new programs and methods.

Get Organized: There is something cathartic about cleaning and organizing your work area. Get rid of the junk and go through your files to be sure they are in order. Delete old emails and shred redundant copies of documents.

Update Marketing Plans and Materials: Take stock of what you’ve got in the way of materials and plan for what you need. While you’re at it, update your database and map out a strategy to contact these prospects in the year ahead. Take a dive deep into the websites of your peers and competitors, including those that offer similar products and/or services and those that compete for budgetary resources.

Conduct a Year-End Review: By taking careful stock of what you did well and what you need to work on, you can begin to craft a plan for making changes that will serve your business well.

Get a Head Start: Get going early on year-end bookkeeping tasks and tax preparation work. This information is crucial to making decisions for next year.

If you use some of your downtime through the holiday season to do these activities, then you can hit the ground running in January, focused and productive.

You’ll also be more prepared for whatever 2012 may bring.

STRATEGY
How a ‘Big Idea’ Makes a Big Difference

The best businesses always have something bigger than the pursuit of profit…they have an idea behind them.

The unfortunate passing of Apple’s Steve Jobs rekindled what it means to be a visionary. For Apple, it was superb design and flawless functionality. They then turned an idea into an empire worth more than the U.S. Treasury.

All businesses can benefit from a vision statement. It keeps your business plan focused and it helps set you apart from the competition.

Coming up with the big idea can be tough. To develop your vision statement, consider what led you to start your own business. If it wasn’t a desire to improve upon an existing idea, then consider what frustrations you have with like products or services. Ask yourself what you’re going to promise, how you’re going to deliver, whom you’re going to deliver to. Remember to factor in how you meet psychological needs – a powerful selling point that keeps customers coming back.

It’s just as important to know what your business isn’t about. This is crucial if you’re a small business just starting out, as owners tend to be eager to please and overspread themselves into areas they don’t excel in and can’t deliver on. Overreaching also compromises your business integrity.

A solid vision statement that gets across a company’s big idea can really drive your business forward by offering a goal and communicating what benefits you offer customers. It also plays a huge role in developing your brand.

Proper insurance coverage for directors and officers is needed by organizations both large and small.

People don’t want to take on these types of positions if they know their personal assets could be at stake if they were to be sued.
Directors’ and officers’ coverage provides that protection. Such a policy ensures that the personal assets of a director or officer of the corporation are protected.

Liability is often an issue when corporate decisions are made and somebody feels they’ve lost money or they’ve been harmed in some way.

Nonprofit organizations like social service and mental health agencies, condo associations, private schools, day care centers, churches and other religious organizations, and youth sports organizations are all examples of groups that would benefit from a directors’ and officers’ policy.

Many people want to volunteer their time on such nonprofit boards, but they may not realize they take on the legal responsibilities of these positions.

In a nonprofit setting, claims can arise from an alleged wrongful termination or a perceived mismanagement of the organization’s funds.
Both can be financially devastating without a proper directors’ and officers’ policy in place.

In addition to the liability coverage it provides, the directors’ and officers’ policy will pay to defend all claims. Defending a lawsuit can cost several hundred thousand dollars. Be sure to find a policy where the defense costs are covered in addition to the limit of insurance.

If your pricing is out of sync with your competitors, if you rely too much on sales and promotions, or if your business is attracting bargain-hunters, these are signs your pricing is wrong. First-time entrepreneurs often feel they must undercut competitors to win business. But good pricing is fair, reasonable and reflects the value of the product or service you provide.

Zero to One Million, by Ryan Allis

It’s never a bad thing to hear about business success from someone who runs a successful business! You might not want to do what they have done, but at least you know that they have walked the walk.

Ryan Allis built a successful Internet business. This book tells his story and then pulls out some essential strategies for building your own company.

Much of the book is aimed at people who have not yet started a business. There’s an interesting discussion on whether to go after outside investment or to bootstrap your business, and whether to create an enterprise you can sell for a lot of money or a “lifestyle” business that isn’t worth many millions but gives you a comfortable living and a life under your own control.

For those already in business, there’s useful information on marketing, product creation and team building – stories based on personal experience but with near-universal relevance.

“Every right implies a responsibility; Every opportunity, an obligation, Every possession, a duty.”

“A friendship founded on business is better than a business founded on friendship.”

“Don’t blame the marketing department. The buck stops with the chief executive.”

“I’d rather earn 1% off 100 people’s efforts than 100% off my own efforts.”

“Good leadership consists of showing average people how to do the work of superior people.”

“I believe in the dignity of labor, whether with head or hand; that the world owes no man a living but that it owes every man an opportunity to make a living.”

“I can think of nothing less pleasurable than a life devoted to pleasure.”

“I know of nothing more despicable and pathetic than a man who devotes all the hours of the waking day to the making of money for money’s sake.”

Do You Need Employment Practices Coverage?

Business owners and executives – especially those who run small and medium-sized enterprises where rules and procedures are more lax compared to larger corporations – are more vulnerable than ever in the day-to-day operation of their businesses.

As a result, employment practices liability insurance (EPLI) has become more prevalent in the work world of today.

Following are some examples where EPLI would help:

A male employee is discriminated against because of his sexual orientation.

A female employee is harassed because she is pregnant with her fifth child.

A co-worker is berated because of a disability and feels that he has suffered emotional distress.

An employee sues over what she feels is a wrongful termination because she was ready to retire within a year.

A delivery person files a suit because he feels sexually harassed while at your place of business.

A long-term employee sues because she feels she should have been promoted to a high-ranking position.

Should a claim arise of the nature listed above, EPLI coverage would provide for the investigation and defense of the claim as well as provide a limit of insurance should a judgment be made against a business.

Steps can be taken to prevent and minimize the instances of these types of circumstances.

For example:

Management at all levels should make a very clear, strong and consistent statement to everyone in the company that there is a zero tolerance level for any behavior that makes another employee uncomfortable. This can be done through the employee manual and seminars on harassment in the workplace.

Management should implement and communicate a procedure that makes employees feel safe to report a situation that may make them feel uncomfortable. Implement an open-door policy between management and employees to keep the lines of communication open and free from anxiety.

Management should communicate with the person making the claim to let him or her know that his or her statement is being taken seriously. An action plan should be created to investigate all complaints, and discipline and potential termination of the offending parties should be undertaken.

Management should ensure executives are adequately insured. Up to $1 million in coverage can be included on a business owner’s policy for a minimum premium. Higher limits can be quoted as part of the general liability policy or even its own separate policy. Not all insurance carriers offer the same coverage and deductibles.

Your agent would be happy to find the best coverage that suits you.

Why should I buy life insurance?

Many financial experts consider life insurance to be the cornerstone of sound financial planning. It can be an important tool in the following situations:

Replace income for dependents
If people depend on your income, life insurance can replace that income for them if you die. The most commonly recognized case of this is parents with young children. However, it can also apply to couples in which the survivor would be financially stricken by the income lost through the death of a partner, and to dependent adults, such as parents, siblings or adult children who continue to rely on you financially. Insurance to replace your income can be especially useful if the government- or employer-sponsored benefits of your surviving spouse or domestic partner will be reduced after your death.

Pay final expenses
Life insurance can pay your funeral and burial costs, probate and other estate administration costs, debts and medical expenses not covered by health insurance.

Create an inheritance for your heirs
Even if you have no other assets to pass to your heirs, you can create an inheritance by buying a life insurance policy and naming them as beneficiaries.

Pay federal “death” taxes and state “death” taxes
Life insurance benefits can pay estate taxes so that your heirs will not have to liquidate other assets or take a smaller inheritance. Changes in the federal “death” tax rules between now and January 1, 2011 will likely lessen the impact of this tax on some people, but some states are offsetting those federal decreases with increases in their state-level “death” taxes.

Make significant charitable contributions
By making a charity the beneficiary of your life insurance, you can make a much larger contribution than if you donated the cash equivalent of the policy’s premiums.

Create a source of savings
Some types of life insurance create a cash value that, if not paid out as a death benefit, can be borrowed or withdrawn on the owner’s request. Since most people make paying their life insurance policy premiums a high priority, buying a cash-value type policy can create a kind of “forced” savings plan. Furthermore, the interest credited is tax deferred (and tax exempt if the money is paid as a death claim).

Two Reasons to Think About Commercial Auto Coverage

Business owners get different types of coverage under a commercial as opposed to a personal insurance auto policy. Following are two types of commercial auto policy coverage:

Hired and Nonowned Auto: For any business with employees, this coverage is a must. It provides auto liability to a business when a vehicle must be hired or borrowed to conduct business. The most common scenario is the way this applies to employees. Hired and nonowned coverage will protect the business while an employee is out doing anything from running errands to making sales calls in his or her own vehicle. The business is “borrowing” the employee’s car to do its work. You might say, “Wouldn’t my employee’s personal auto policy take care of this scenario?” Yes…and no. If an employee is at fault for an accident and is on business time, the injured party could go after the employee personally as well as the business for damages. This is where hired and nonowned coverage kicks in. Coverage is available at a $1 million limit for a few hundred dollars.

Driver Other Car: This coverage is specifically designed for the business owner who may have one or two cars that are used personally and commercially. Most personal auto insurance companies want nothing to do with insuring a business. A personal auto policy was not intended for that purpose. Driver other car coverage provides personal liability coverage to the owner and his or her spouse, thus eliminating the need for two policies.

Review your auto policy, and if you don’t find such coverage listed, it’s very easy to get a quote from your agent.

The days of having one deductible for all property insurance claims are gone.

Insurance companies have introduced varied deductibles, depending on the type of claim.

Wind/hail deductibles are showing up more frequently on both personal and business insurance policies, thanks to the number of claims from windstorms, hailstorms and hurricanes in the last decade.

If you have any type of claim other than those listed above, you would pay your chosen standard deductible, perhaps $1,000.

When it comes to a wind or hail claim, the deductible is calculated a little differently. It is a percentage of your building limit.

The percentage can be from 2% to 5% of that building limit.

This means that if you have a $100,000 building with a 5% wind/hail deductible, your deductible becomes $5,000 rather than $1,000 for that claim.

A “named storm endorsement” is another option a carrier uses, depending on the hurricane proneness of the state. Here, the percentage deductible would apply for damage as a result of a named hurricane by the National Weather Service. In the event of wind or hail damage in a non-named storm, your deductible goes back to your standard deductible.

The cover or declaration page of your policy will list whether or not there is a separate wind/hail deductible and, if there is, the percentage. Have your Moran agent take the time to explain the deductibles on your policy and how they would affect you at the time of a claim.

Are You Covered if Data Gets Compromised?

Security breaches seem to be in the news on almost a daily basis.

Just recently, a worker went to a local bar with a thumb drive of his employer’s sensitive customer information in his pocket.

When he left the bar, he left behind that thumb drive, leaving that sensitive information at risk.

In today’s technological age, small to midsize businesses with websites and computer networks that are conducting business across the Internet are at risk of having information compromised.

The insurance industry has responded to the problem by offering cyber-liability insurance to business owners.

First- and third-party coverage is typically provided.

First-party coverage deals with the losses due to a breach of security or privacy caused by an employee.

Coverage may also be provided to notify customers and handle public relations after an event has occurred.

Third-party coverage would deal with losses due to an outside element breaking into computer networks.

Cyber extortion or cyber terrorism – like a threat to initiate a virus if a demand is not met – may also be covered in a cyber-liability policy.

Each insurance carrier has its own type of cyber-liability program. The Moran Team can help you determine how much coverage you may need and which carrier offers the best plan to meet those needs.

The Ins and Outs of Home Insurance Policies

Once the dust has settled from moving into your home, you may want to review your home insurance policy. Indeed, it’s always a good idea to regularly review your policy to give you peace of mind that you have properly protected your most valuable asset.

The policy is usually divided into two parts. The first section typically deals with property coverage, and the second section usually deals with liability coverage. The section on property coverage includes the following groups:

Dwelling: This includes your home.

Other Structures: This includes things like garages and sheds.

Personal Property: This is quite broad and includes all of your stuff anywhere in the world. It also includes other people’s stuff while it is kept at your home.

Loss of Use: This covers costs associated with additional living expenses.

Coverage is provided, presuming that the limit requested is on an “insurance to value” basis. This means if the cost to rebuild your home in the same condition it was prior to the claim is $100,000, then the limit of insurance is $100,000. This is also called replacement cost.

In addition to knowing your limit of coverage, it is also important to know how your insurance carrier settles claims.

The conditions section of the policy outlines the loss-settlement provision and whether or not the coinsurance provision applies.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Place the melted butter in a medium to large bowl.

Add the white and brown sugars and stir until the mixture looks like wet sand. Stir in the egg until combined, then add the mayonnaise and mashed bananas. Sift together the flour and baking powder and gradually stir into the batter until you no longer see any traces of flour. Toss the blueberries with 2 tablespoons flour and then fold into the batter (this keeps the berries from sinking to the bottom of the tin).

Pour the batter into the two prepared loaf tins and bake for 45-60 minutes.

Remove from oven and allow to cool for several minutes before removing from tin.

How to Survive Business Interruption

One of the worst possible scenarios for the average small-business owner is the inability to conduct business. It could be due to a natural disaster or something as small as a major supplier going out of business.

Whatever the cause, the impact is clear – a loss of earning potential and inability to fulfill orders or conduct business.

Fortunately, there is a way to prepare for the worst by purchasing business interruption insurance.

This special type of policy provides protection in the event a business is not able to operate or function. It typically will reimburse the business for lost profits and provide additional funds needed to pay continuing expenses, including the need to reopen in a temporary location or the cost to relocate. Unlike traditional insurance policies that cover damages liability claims or damages to property, business interruption insurance helps offset the indirect costs associated with other losses.

Many small business owners find this an invaluable form of protection. In fact, nearly any small business owner who cannot afford to lose an income stream is likely to benefit.

It is becoming standard practice for business partners, suppliers and providers to demonstrate some level of interruption insurance or other accountability in order to become an exclusive vendor.

Otherwise, it’s wise to have a secondary supplier for critical items or services.

Small business owners wishing to compete for exclusive service rights are especially likely to benefit from the additional layer of protection that is offered by interruption insurance.

Beware of These Common Auto Liability Blunders

For most people, buying auto insurance is like filling the gas tank. They do it once and then forget about it until it’s needed again.

Unfortunately, many people don’t have as much protection as they believe.

There are a number of common mistakes drivers make when purchasing auto liability insurance.

That’s why drivers should work with an agent to pick the right protection for their specific needs.

Following are some pitfalls to avoid when purchasing auto liability insurance:

Purchase the Legal Limit: One of the most common mistakes is purchasing the minimum amount of liability coverage required by your state. While it might seem like a great way to save money in the short term, it’s often a big mistake. Remember, liability protection provides payment in the event that you are at fault in an accident. Property damage, medical bills, and even pain or suffering may exceed the limits of liability, leaving you personally responsible for the remainder of the bill.

Failure to Name Other Drivers: In order to hold costs down, some drivers limit coverage to their personal use of the vehicle. If you ever loan your vehicle to friends or familyon a regular basis, be sure to name that driver on the policy.

Consider Your Personal Protection Needs: Don’t assume other drivers are as responsible in their decisions to purchase the right levels of insurance. Instead, make sure you have adequate coverage to protect your own interests in an accident, including medical coverage.

Is Your College-Bound Child Properly Insured?

Sending a child to college is never simple. After years have been spent planning for the children’s financial future, their leaving home for the first time marks a milestone for anxious parents and children alike.

Unfortunately, in the midst of all the planning and preparation, many parents forget one of the most important steps, and that is ensuring that their college-bound child is properly insured.

Following are some tips to make sure you’re all prepared to start the school year without fear:

Home Away From Home: Verify that your homeowner policy covers personal possessions taken to college. Remember, most policies protect valuables up to a percentage of your total possession coverage. It may be necessary to purchase additional coverage in the form of a rider, especially if your child engages in expensive hobbies. Before packing up, take time to clearly label all belongings and take photographs, as that action will provide important documentation should a problem arise.

Hit the Road: Adding your college student to your auto policy is something you may have done years ago, but be sure to update the policy to reflect the new location of the student … and the vehicle. If the family car is left at home, you might be happy to encounter a big discount. On the other hand, out-of-state college students might come out ahead by purchasing an individual auto policy, especially if they have good driving records. Encourage students to keep their grades up and avoid erratic driving behavior in order to qualify for the best possible rates.

Health Coverage: Under health care reforms, parents may be able to include students on their health insurance policies until they reach the age of 26. Be sure to review the providers available in the new location. For those seeking affordable individual coverage – especially for out-of-state students – check out the options provided by the college itself. Most provide free or very low-cost routine care via a health center with special prices for students. Be sure to review the options to determine which plan best suits the needs of your child and family budget.

INSURANCE
Dangers of Dealing with Multiple Agents

When it comes to working with an insurance agent, more isn’t better.

Unlike medicine, where a second opinion is often a prudent course of action, insurance is one area where two minds are rarely better than one.

Following are some of the dangers of working with multiple agents:

Higher Prices: The threat to your bottom line is very real. Multiple agents increase the risk of purchasing redundant coverage options. An agent who is familiar with all your insurance needs is able to provide comprehensive coverage without duplicating other coverage options. For example, rather than having to write an entirely new policy, it may be possible to add a rider to an existing policy.

Gaps in Coverage: As if paying for duplicate coverage wasn’t a sufficient threat, the risk of leaving out important coverage is especially high when working with multiple agents. Finding a gap in coverage is one lesson most small-business owners can’t afford.

Claim Complexity: Having a trusted agent to turn to in the event of a claim is often as critical as the terms of coverage. Not only is the agent able to expedite filing the proper forms and to inform you of progress, but he or she becomes instrumental in coordinating the process when multiple policies are impacted.

Lack of Continuity: The more policies, the greater the likelihood of forgetting to pay a premium. When working with a single agent, everything you need is in one place – from annual updates of inventory to a single source of contact in the event of an emergency.

Christine Lagorio offers a guide for finding and hiring a good executive assistant (EA). Before beginning the hiring process, she says, it’s important to identify exactly what the position entails and to draw up a job description that includes a summary overview and a list of duties and responsibilities. The article goes on to outline what tasks an EA can be expected to take on, what skills are necessary and what qualifications an employer should look for.

Words That Work, by Frank Luntz

Frank Luntz is best known for the work he has done to help elect presidents, mostly on the Republican side of the spectrum. He is a master at understanding the power of words – not just to help politicians get votes, but also to help businesses thrive.

In this book, which is packed with corporate and political examples, Luntz says that it’s not the words that are said that are important, it’s what is actually heard and understood. And that means that the significance of various words culturally can have a huge effect on your message.

In the business context, for example, Luntz talks about Las Vegas promoting “gaming,” not “gambling.” The actual product didn’t change, but the switch in words changed how people saw the industry. Similarly, “liquor” became “spirits” – erasing the negative connotations of one word with the uplifting sense of another. Many businesses could benefit from these kinds of changes.

The person that turns over the most rocks wins the game. And that’s always been my philosophy.

In this business if you’re good, you’re right six times out of ten. You’re never going to be right nine times out of ten.

Go for a business that any idiot can run – because sooner or later, any idiot probably is going to run it.

Who Needs E&O Insurance? E&O provides an additional layer of protection for lawyers, architects, financial consultants and other small-business owners who routinely provide services to others. In fact, nearly anyone who provides services or information to others may be at risk of a lawsuit. Rather than risk your financial future, E&O insurance provides the peace of mind in knowing you are protected in the event of a problem. By transferring risk to the insurance company, you have a powerful partner on your side in the event of a claim.

What’s Covered? E&O policies typically help defray the cost of defending against litigation arising from professional liability claims due to mistakes. Legal costs and damages are usually included up to the specified limit.

What’s Not Covered? Intentional, illegal or fraudulent activities are excluded, along with punitive damages. Specific limitations or restrictions may be included in your individual policy, so it is important to work closely with your insurance agent to select the right coverage options for your specific needs.

Is E&O Insurance Expensive? E&O insurance rates vary by the type of services provided, annual revenue generated, type of policy and prior claim history. In general, E&O can be structured to fit nearly any type of budget, depending upon selected options.

With an average cost of roughly $600 per year, flood insurance is often considered one of the more expensive forms of coverage.

It can be tempting, then, to skip it when renewing your policy. Unfortunately, that might be a big mistake.

Water-related damage is one of the most common types of claims submitted to insurance agents each year.

Perhaps even more surprising, though, is that as many as one-quarter of all claims are submitted on homes located outside of the designated “high risk” areas.

Major causes of insurance claims can include:

Rising Waters: Rivers, lakes and even seaside areas are often associated with flood zones, but small ponds, retention areas, canals and other less obvious areas may be subject to rising waters.

Storm Surge: Hurricanes, earthquakes and other natural disasters can create a subsequent storm surge resulting in water damage to homes.

Fortunately, it is possible to plan early in order to minimize or even prevent water-related damage.

Following are some tips to avoid problems:

Insure Ahead of Time: Once a storm or natural disaster is identified, it is difficult to obtain coverage. Spring and summer are traditionally associated with the majority of environmental-related flooding, so purchase your policy as early as possible.

Install Water Sensors: Reduce the risk of severe water damage by installing water sensors in the basement or other moisture-prone areas.

Want to Kick That Habit? Check Out These Tips

The Free Dictionary defines a habit as “a recurrent, often unconscious pattern of behavior that is acquired through frequent repetition.”

It also says breaking a habit, though, is “not so easy.”

Breaking a bad habit is doable, though. All you need is patience, persistence, willpower, lots of support and luck.

As noted in the Free Dictionary, habits are often unconscious. If you don’t know when, why and where they’re going to arise, they can be hard to kick. Many experts advise journaling. By writing down your habits, you find out what’s behind them and can then substitute an alternative behavior.

You may want to check out a professional program. You can sign up for one of several 42-day programs at www.habitchanger.com. You’ll receive daily challenges, email and text reminders, and a tracker to chart your progress.

Consider the cost – monetary or nonmonetary – of your habit. Then consider paying yourself. Give yourself small rewards when you are able to push away from the table, stub out the cigarette or stop swearing in traffic. If you’re trying to break the overeating-at-dinner habit, though, don’t reward yourself with a midnight snack of cake and ice cream.

Breaking a habit can be incredibly difficult. Be kind to yourself. Zenhabits founder Leo Babauta has developed a guide for beginners at his blog at www.zenhabits.net. Working through the guide may help you keep your equilibrium while you break a habit.

Discover the ABCs of Medicare

The Medicare program came into existence 46 years ago when President Lyndon Johnson signed into law the Social Security Act of 1965.

This program is federally administered and provides healthcare coverage to Americans who are age 65 and over, as well as to those under 65 who have certain types of disabilities or illnesses.

Parts A & B

The original Medicare program consists of Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B.

Part A offers healthcare coverage for hospital stays, as well as hospital inpatient procedures.

This part of Medicare will also provide some limited coverage for skilled nursing care. There is no premium required for Medicare Part A as long as the recipient and/or his or her spouse have paid into the Social Security system for 40 quarters, or typically for 10 years.

Medicare Part B offers coverage for physicians’ services and outpatient care.

There is a premium that is required for those who wish to participate in Medicare Part B.

The amount of premium due is based on the annual income of the Medicare Part B recipient. Oftentimes, the monthly premium for Medicare Part B is simply deducted from the recipients’ Social Security income check.

Part C

Another name for Medicare Part C is Medicare Advantage.

Medicare Part C essentially includes both Medicare Parts A and B. Part C is offered by private insurers, who are approved by the Medicare program to provide this coverage.

In most cases, those enrolled in Medicare Part C are required to use specific hospitals, doctors and other providers similar to the operation of a health maintenance organization or preferred provider organization.

Medicare Part C requires a monthly premium to be paid, and oftentimes co-payments or co-insurance is required for certain services.

Part D

Medicare Part D offers prescription drug insurance to everyone eligible for Medicare. You are not autimatically enrolled in Part D; you must join a plan yourself. Part D plans are available through private insurance providers.

This can help you integrate into the neighborhood and also provide a reliable source of local intelligence. Another way to score points and encourage repeat customers is to plug into the local community by using vendors, suppliers and motifs from the immediate vicinity.

Writing a business plan is not something that needs to take months of effort, according to Ellen Rohr, author of a book called The Weekend Biz Plan. Rohr identified and explained the key elements that need to be in a business plan. First is a short (eight-to-25-word) mission statement that explains why you do what you do. Next are goals listed in terms of achievables such as dollars, numbers, hours or percentages.

How to Sell at Margins Higher Than Your Competitors, by Lawrence L. Steinmetz

There are two simple but important lessons to take away from this book. First, business is a game of margins, not volume. And second, most businesses underprice their products and services.

One of the biggest mistakes a business can make is to cut prices and hope to make it up in volume. Although you would think this possible, the math just doesn’t work, because by cutting prices you are slashing your margins. And that can be deadly.

It’s a big reason for the large number of failures among small and midsize businesses.

The other mistake is pricing too low. Customers would have us believe that they shop mainly on price, but, as Steinmetz points out in this book, that is seldom true. They are willing to pay more if you offer value.

This book is essential reading for anyone in management or sales.

INSURANCE
How to Be Prepared If Disaster Strikes

More than 25% of businesses that close due to a natural disaster never reopen, according to research conducted by the Insurance Information Institute. Small-business owners are especially vulnerable. That’s why disaster recovery planning for small-business owners is more important than ever. Following are some tips to ensure that you’re prepared:

Review Your Insurance Options: Loss of income and loss of use of plant and equipment are situations encountered after a disaster. Review existing policies to ensure that you have proper coverage. Most policies exclude earthquakes, and flood coverage, so it is important to purchase riders to ensure that you have full coverage.

Duplicate Data and Important Contacts: Cloud computing is making it easier to back up existing data and important contact information in a secure, off-site location, but it’s important to make sure it is performed on a regular basis and available when needed.

Implement Alternative Work Schedules and Locations: During a crisis, many members of staff may be delayed or unavailable, so it is important to plan ahead. Cross-train employees and provide several alternative forms of communication and work locations, including home, off-site offices and other alternatives. Make sure employees understand how to put the plans into use after an emergency.

Practice the Plan: Disaster recovery should be practiced from time to time. Have a written plan of communication and then actually take the time to implement it on a practice basis from time to time. Allow employees to work from home or other alternative locations, perform duties for which they have been cross-trained, and access information stored off-site.

A company page on LinkedIn enables you to speak to millions of professionals about your company’s products and services, job opportunities, and work culture.

You can use a company page to bring your brand to life.

You can also use a company page to highlight how members use your products or to post updates on key developments in your firm or your industry.

It takes only about 30 minutes to set up a LinkedIn company page.

First, however, you need to have an email address with your company domain.

This email address must also be listed on your profile.

Addresses tied to free email services like Hotmail, Gmail and Yahoo don’t count.

To create a company page, click on “Companies” in the navigation bar near the top of the home page.

Then click the “Add a Company” link.

You will see tabs labeled “Company Overview,” “Careers,” “Products and Services,” and “Analytics.”

The overview provides a guide for setting up your company page and presenting a good snapshot of your company.

The “Products and Services” tab tells you how to showcase your offerings and highlight featured products.

The “Careers” tab allows you to interact with job seekers and describe your company’s culture and hiring practices.

In addition to being a great place to promote your company to LinkedIn members, your company page gets listed in Google’s and LinkedIn’s search engines.

A pool party is a great way to entertain young and old alike, but it can also increase the risk of personal liability should anyone get injured. Following are seven swimming pool and insurance safety tips to keep you cool and safe this summer:

Verify Your Coverage: Speak to your insurance agent about the total amount of medical and liability coverage you have in the event of an accident or injury. An umbrella policy is an affordable way to provide an additional layer of protection without breaking the bank.

CPR and First Aid: Before hosting a pool party it’s always a good idea to make sure at least one person is properly trained in CPR/first aid.

Secure the Area: Pools should be properly secured with a high fence or enclosure that is locked when not in use. Adult supervision is a must when children are using the pool.

Child and Pet Proof: Installation of a pool alarm can more than pay for itself in reduced anxiety and decreased premiums, but be sure to select the right size and type for maximum protection.

Establish Rules: Pool parties are great fun, but be sure everyone understands what is and isn’t acceptable. Common causes of pool-related injuries include running, diving and intoxication.

Safety First: Keep emergency equipment within reach, including a floatation device and emergency-related phone numbers. Always ask whether people know how to swim, especially children.

Alternatives: Other water hazards include hot tubs, swim spas and even ponds. Maintain the common area and reduce direct access whenever possible to discourage children or pets from gaining access when you are away from home.

5 Ways to Reduce Costly Damage from Lightning

Summer electrical storms are no laughing matter, as lightning causes millions of dollars in damage. Following are some simple steps to reduce your risk and limit damage:

Lightning Rods: Proper grounding and distribution can dramatically reduce damage during an electrical event. Lightning rods have been routinely installed on commercial properties, but it’s just as easy to have them installed in residential areas.

Surge Protectors: Without a doubt, one of the most common causes of electronic and computer failure is an electrical surge. Appliances are at risk, especially newer models with built-in computer chips and electronic components. Installation of whole-house or direct-plug-in-type surge protectors provides an important layer of protection.

Backup Files: Computer data, photographs, digital music and other files can be costly or even impossible to replace. Back up files on a regular basis. For especially valuable data, consider purchasing additional insurance to cover losses or help replace/restore lost data.

Insurance: Many homeowner policies explicitly limit or exclude losses due to electrical storms or lightning. Ask your agent about the cost of coverage for appliances, electronics and computers, as well as the data included on each. Consider a stand-alone policy for sensitive items.

Extended Warranties: Many computers, appliances and electronics provide extended warranties at the time of purchase. Some include lightning protection, while others expressly limit losses due to lightning.

Carefully read the policy prior to purchase to understand what is included.
